BREATHING ROOM: Presuming grace
24.05.13
Surely, a fruit tree is meant to
bear fruit. For three long years, the tree had failed to give any fruit. But this tree is worth another chance. He considers it worth his while not only to give the tree another chance but to argue for the opportunity. In their hearts, Jesus’ listeners rally for the tree to be cut down immediately. Lenten days are upon us. Many followers of Jesus are recalling the days that led up to his death on the cross. It would take just as much work to cut the roots and fertilize the tree as it would to get an axe and handsaw. Once upon a time, the Master Storyteller himself was talking with a group about what it means to repent. Then, he launches into the parable of the fig tree. Without fruit, by next year, the outcome is clear.
