Snow Leopard coming soon
Filed under technology, work
Less than a year after releasing Leopard, Apple announces Snow Leopard at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
It will be the newest Mac OS X version in a span of seven years, after Cheetah (10.0), Puma (10.1), Jaguar (10.2), Panther (10.3), Tiger (10.4), and Leopard (10.5).
Earlier this year we were told that the 10.6 version would be called Thundercat. I wonder how the old man Steve Jobs gets inspiration for the names of their cats?
(Isn’t she adorable?
)
But why so soon after Leopard?
It shall be recalled that Leopard was held up several months before it was released last year, without us knowing for sure when it would come out. And then when it was finally released, several had the opinion that it was more like a beta version that didn’t undergo thorough testing. While some users were probably still installing 10.5, the 10.5.1 version was hot on its heels to fix the 10.5 bugs. Rumors had it that Apple had focused their resources on the iPhone, thus the delays and the bugs.
Apple says that unlike the previous OS X versions, Snow Leopard would have no new features. They’re aiming for stability and performance improvements in this new version.
Because of this, some users take the Snow Leopard version to be a “maintenance update of Leopard,” and are outraged that they are being asked to pay for it. Some are worried that their PowerPCs might become obsolete (as Snow Leopard would be needing Intel processors, am I right?). Some agree that Apple has delivered enough innovations in the previous OS X versions. Some are just plain excited (the filthy rich, I suppose).
Whatever they say, this spells more work for us wage slaves. Lemme guess: we’re going to update everything for Snow Leopard, after we’ve just updated them for Leopard, yes?
Gee. I’m glad I won’t be working on Mac projects anymore.
P.S.
Check out this slideshow of the adorable Snow Leopard (the real cat, not the Mac). I know I have weird taste, so stop looking at me like that.

good that you’re not working on Mac projects anymore (and have others reaping the benefits of your work)
